Allen Smith and Alan Heath start ICL Computer Standby Services to provide disaster recovery for ICL’s mainframes. ICL Computer Standby Services was a wholly owned subsidiary of ICL, a large chemicals company.
The premises of ICL Computer Standby Services were in Growthpoint Park in Midrand.
Realising that there was a need for consulting services relating to disaster recovery, Smith and Heath launched a consultancy, Shadow Solutions. This company eventually became ContinuitySA.
Judging that the consultancy had grown as much as it could on its own, Smith and Heath sold Shadow Solutions to Siltek, a major IT services and distribution company.
